ADOPTION/REHOMING
THROUGH COFOAF

I would like to take a minute and explain our policy here at COFOAF regarding Adoption/rehoming:

First and foremost, we do not support breeding. There are so many birds out there that are in need of forever homes, due to life changing events in many people lives. We would love to facilitate and help with this.

We, of course, would prefer that our birds never have to leave their current homes, but we understand some circumstances warrant the need to rehome. The information you provide will help us to determine the needs of your bird(s) and the most caring and stable environment for its future forever home.

In order to ensure that a bird is placed in the environment best suited to meet its needs, all applicants must successfully complete the placement process. All placements will be made in the best interest of the bird, and decided by a majority vote of the COFOAF Placement Committee. The placement process requires:

*  A thoroughly completed COFOAF Application. You may submit your application online, by mail,or by fax.

*A phone interview with a COFOAF Representative.

*2 references from people who have known you for 5 years or more.

 * 1 reference from an avian veterinarian or your regular veterinarian.

*1 or more visits with the bird(s) being considered for placement.

  * A home visit from a COFOAF representative.

*Housing arrangements approved COFOAF for the bird being considered for placement.

  * Agreement to all terms of the Adoption Contract.

The Representatives of COFOAF will thoroughly consider all applicants within a sixty-mile radius Columbus, Oh. All placements are approved or denied based on the submitted Placement Application, telephone interview, home interview, references, recommendation of the Representative of COFOAF, and majority vote of the COFOAF Placement Committee.

Approved placement applicants are required to obtain a COFOAF-approved cage (if one does not come with the bird) for the bird to be adopted, demonstrate a clear understanding of the individual bird's needs, agree to follow-up phone calls and visits from a COFOAF Representative, and sign a legally binding Placement Contract. COFOAF Volunteer Staff, family, friends, and associates must meet the same stringent criteria to become an approved COFOAF adoption home.

Every COFOAF Adopter receives a copy of all available history and medical records of the bird adopted. COFOAF Placement Counselors work closely with adopters throughout the placement process and after the bird has been placed in his/her new home to ensure a successful adjustment and the continued well-being of the adopted bird.

Placement Applications that fail to meet all of COFOAFs' requirements for adoptive homes will be denied and the applicant will be contacted by a COFOAF Representative. An applicant previously approved as a COFOAF adoptive home may or may not be approved to adopt another bird or birds from COFOAF.
